Sue Brigham, Letter to City Council

Dear Mayor and SLO Council Members,

I have thought long and hard before composing this letter and my heart is somewhat torn by my stand on the proposed development of Sunny Acres for the mentally challenged.  Having a family member struggling with mental health issues makes me very empathetic with their daily challenges.  But, having said that, I have also attended support groups surrounded by many other family members in the same situation.  I have repeatedly heard a resounding voice by them that having their loved one living in their homes is disruptive and not desirable.  Medication compliancy is a frequent challenge as well documented for the mentally ill.  The News and Review has done articles on the homeless who are mentally ill and their inappropriate behaviors downtown when they have unfortunately gone off their medication.

Yes, do we need a facility to house them?  That is very obviously a YES but I personally feel very strongly that such a development in a residential neighborhood/daycare area poses potential safety issues and is not acceptable or appropriate.

Respectfully submitted,

Sue Brigham
